Joan Armatrading

Joan Armatrading was born in St Kitts and started her singing career in London in the seventies and in June 2001 she was awarded an MBE. She has an earthy but warm vocal range and her intricate acoustic guitar work is great to listen to. She is one of my favourite female singer/songwriters. The following tracks are taken from “The Collection” CD, which covers songs released between 1976 and 1980.

Somebody Who Loves You

Turn Out The Light

Woncha Come On Home

Willow

Love and Affection

Water With The Wine

Met him on a Monday, and he said he loved me so

He walked me to my door, before I knew it to my living room

I thought there was no need for money when he took me in his arms

Drank some whisky, hung his coat upon the stand

That’s when the music started,

I heard the light switch flick

I stumbled on a love shoe,

The fever started

This man was getting hot

I’ve got no strength to make him stop

I guess it’s too late but I’ll know next time

To mix some water with the wine

The sun came pouring in at 5 upon my face

I felt the taste of last nights love upon my lips

I wasn’t sure if I had dreamt it or had not

But there upon the pillow was the face I had forgot

That’s when he said he loved me

Could be the truth this time

He put his arms about me

The fever started

This man was getting hot

I’ve got no strength to make him stop

I guess it’s too late but I’ll know next time

To mix some water with the wine
